Gillman Barracks

I didnt know of Gillman Barracks' existence till I read about it in the newspapers one day. Looks like Singapore does have some hidden gems yet to be discovered by me. In case you do not know, Gillman Barracks is a place that is located near the Labrador Park MRT Station, which houses many galleries for contemporary art displays. I was there on 14 September, only to blog about it now! Heh. My posts should be more to date. As usual, Breadman was my companion for arty farty stuff even though we both cant fully understand and appreciate contemporary art. My main agenda was to visit Ai Weiwei's baby formula exhibition on milk tin cans.
Ai Weiwei is both a contemporary artist as well as a political activist. He has outwardly shown his displeasure with the government's stance on democracy and human rights. Although his work has usually been controversial, the widely acclaimed artist still stands by his views and opinions. For the record, he was even arrested and held for 81 days! This exhibition is easy to understand, if you have heard about the melamine milk scandal back in 2008 that caused such an upheaval worldwide.  The original exhibition was supposed to be in Chinese, but it has been translated into English language as that is a universal language. However, I kind of hoped it was in the original language because there is no 100 percent direct translation that can accurately translate the artist's emotions, feelings and message that was originally intended. There is bound to be some form of between the two versions.

This is a very clear message that is directed to the government to urge it to take actions to solve the impending social issues and to prevent new ones from mushrooming.
In case you are wondering, these tin cans are not empty. They are fully filled and placed in the shape of a continent!
This is my personal favourite liner. It is short yet impactful. It implicitly tells you of the bureaucratic red tape that is so hard to deal with as well the the helplessness of parents. You want someone to take action? Fat hope.

Nestle. I drank nestle milk when I was young. Mom said I was the expensive baby as sister drank mainly breast milk while i preferred formula milk. Hehe.

 Enfagrow A plus.
 Karicare.

 Similac by Abbott.
Alright this is the end of the exhibition, it is both an enriching and fruitful experience for me because prior to any visit to an exhibition, I will do my read up. Thus I learned more about the artist while researching on him. General knowledge power up!

Some other interesting things that I spotted along the way. Grammar error spotted. I think it's intentional.
Another grammar error. Try correcting it!

I might return to Gillman Barracks any time soon because I heard that the cafe there offers this new food item: A ramen burger! Can you believe it? A burger  made of noodles. Gillman Barracks changes its exhibition galleries every few weeks! Do check out if you are free. Skip the movies and the shopping. Do some exhibition viewing for a change.
