So, my dining companion for that night was Breadman because he is a regular eater of vegetarian food. I myself only eats them twice a month as part of my religious belief. We reached Sufood by 8pm and I was shocked to see this 140-seat diner completely filled! As we didnt make any reservation, all we could do is to wait. Anyway, this is Sufood's first outlet outside of Taiwan and it is a collaboration with our local restaurant, Putien. We finally got a seat at 9.15pm and both of us were hungry by then. This place serves 8 course meal for $25++, very pocket friendly. However, do bear in mind that the breadsticks and drinks are also part of the 8 courses. If you think the servings and portion size is small, then you are very wrong!
For a place that looks really elegant, I am actually surprised that their prices are affordable. This place is fully packed because of 3 reasons: 1. It is located in town 2. It's a vegetarian restaurant 3. It's a new restaurant. More and more Singaporeans are getting more health conscious these days and they prefer their greens than meat, thus this place opened with much fanfare. I am still a meat eater, but I have almost given up pork (still eat my dim sum on and off) and beef. One fine day, chicken shall be out. I am hoping to turn into a pescetarian (one that eats seafood as their only source if meat). How about becoming a vegetarian then? Hmm, I dun think I can ever do that. I still love my salmon very much.
Complimentary bottle of water. Somehow storing water in glass bottles makes me tempted to drink the water...
We started off the meal with an Appetizer set which comes with cherry tomato jelly, oriental white water snowflake greens with sesame dressing ( a kind of vegetable that is only available in Taiwan) and yuca root drizzled with blueberry coulis. You are supposed to eat from right to left as it tantalizes your tastebuds and whet your appetite while you anticipate the next dish. Amongst the trio, my fav is the yuca root because it reminds me of radish and I like the crunchiness in it. It helps that blueberry sauce is drizzled on it too since I am a huge fan of that antioxidant rich berry. I didnt quite like the cherry tomato jelly as it is too sour and sweet at the same time. Probably if you like preserved plums, this one might appeal to you.
After the appetizer, we were served with Rosemary Breadsticks with Mustard Dip. (I just learnt that they serve blueberry dip as well, hmm but we werent provided with that option though?) Oh my god, these breadsticks were divine! If only I can ask for seconds. haha... I have not eaten breadsticks as nice as these and I am strictly not kidding. These were freshly baked, served warm and were soft, with a nice hint of rosemary in it. No yeasty smell, no overly baked hardness, not too dry, everything was superb! I cant help but sing praises for this dish.
Mushroom Salad for Breadman. Actually if you ask me, I think this dish is kind of oriental, something that only chinese restaurants would serve. So this isnt really all that Italian to me. This dish consists of button and shitake mushrooms with steamed broccoli and sliced cherry tomatoes glazed in a vinegar dressing. The mushrooms were juicy and the broccoli was nicely cooked but I felt that the garlic and dressing were too salty.
My choice was the Fruit Salad with Strawberry Yoghurt. I chose this because I havent had my two servings of fruit for that day yet. Each day I try to consume two servings of fruit, but so far I only managed to do one serving only. Hmm. I love this dish because the fruits went so well with the yoghurt. There was guava, watermelon, apple and honeydew. I think I can replicate this at home! Haha.
Mushroom and Pea Pottage Soup was Breadman's choice. It consists of button, shitake and king oyster mushrooms stewed with blended sweet peas. This was surprisingly good! I was expecting it to be too thick and powdery, as with the consistency of peas. Peas arent my favourite vegetables after all. It kind of reminded me of cream of mushroom soup. I like how visually appetizing this dish looks. Thumbs up for the staff for still being so attentive despite it being their rush hour and the lack of manpower. It's these minor minor details that diners take into consideration when deciding whether to revisit a place.
I decided to opt for something light and Asian as I am under the impression that western soups are too rich and thick and I'll get tired of them after a few mouthfuls. This soup lives up to my expectations and it reminded me of my mother's cooking! My mom's lotus root soup. haha. I like that this soup is light yet hearty and it's packed full of goodness and nutrients. I expected this soup to be sweet because of the sweet potato but it was savoury, something that you will drink in chinese restaurants and at home. Believe it a not, at this point, I was already quite full! All the fluids dancing in my stomach... Haha.
Together with our soup, we were served a shot of fruit vinegar. I have no idea what fruit it is but it tasted like berries. I really like this because it was refreshing and it supposedly helps you to digest and cleanse your system before you have your mains. This was sweet and spicy and as compared to the usual vinegar, this is not pungent at all. Did you know that it is good to incorporate fruit vinegar or apple cidar vinegar into your diet? I should probably include it in mine. Current health foods I am taking: Manuka honey and Chia Seeds. It doesnt hurt to include one more. Heh.
Now for the mains, Breadman's choice was the Vegetable Pita Pockets. Actually no, he wanted to eat the Calzone as he saw the opposite table having that but I convinced him to try out this dish as this is one of the recommended dishes from 8dayseat. Haha. Well he listened to me but sulked a little. This dish was nice as well and it did not taste like I am eating vegetables at all. The round little balls were made up of mushroom, pepper and broccoli baked in a zesty Arrabbiata jalapeƱo sauce. How do you eat this dish? You are supposed to scoop one nice ball of veg and put it inside the pita pocket. It turned out a little messy for us though as you know we arent very neat people when it comes to eating. Haha.
The Macaroni Alfredo Casserole consists of peppers, asparagus and oyster mushrooms served oven-baked in signature creamy sauce, topped with grilled cherry tomatoes and a
layer of melted parmesan cheese. This was pretty nice during the first few mouthfuls but I quickly got sick of it. There was too much cream and too much cheese. It made my tummy full quickly. Bad choice for me. Breadman had to help me finish it as I was pretty bloated after a few mouthfuls.
Some artwork I left behind on our paper mat. Haha.
Finally it's time for dessert! No matter how full our stomachs are, there is surprisingly still room for desserts. Strangely enough. Haha
Breadman chose Sesame Panna Cotta while I had the Osmathus Jelly. Actually he wanted the Osmanthus Jelly as well but I convinced him to try out others. Cuz we are at a new eatery, of course must try out as many dishes as possible la. Ok, I admit I can be a little nasty at times. Haha. Again, this dish is one of the highly raved dishes in Sufood and of course we foodies must try la. I think it tasted rather nice but Breadman felt that it was too heavy. As with the Macaroni Alfredo, after a few mouthfuls, you will get slightly sick of this. Verdict: We cant take overly cheesy, milky and creamy food.
I was extremely happy with my Osmathus Jelly and I love that I can taste bits of Osmanthus in this. The jelly was really refreshing and it was totally infused with Osmanthus. Someday, I shall replicate this dessert at home. Hehe. Ok I first learn about this dish after trying it out at Tim Ho Wan. Oh dear, that reminds me that my Tim Ho Wan post has been backdated for like more than half a year! Oops.
Finally for drinks, Breadman had the Passion Fruit Calamansi Tea. The taste of passion fruit wasnt that obvious in this one and I find the drinks too sweet. I had the Ashitaba, which is made of restorative Japanese Ashitaba leaves, blended with aloe vera juice and honey. Again, this was too sweet.
I really love Sufood and I am thankful to 8dayseat for this lovely dining experience :) I'll definitely return next time.
