Movie Review: Taxi! Taxi!

As I usually support local film productions (I have watched almost all of Jack Neo's films) because they are elderly-friendly as they are in mandarin, Kelvin Sng's Taxi! Taxi! became the movie of choice among my aunt and mom. Frankly speaking, initially I decided to watch it because I thought it was a Mark Lee's film. It was to my dismay when I realised that he was merely acting in it, not directing the film.

Plot: Retrenched science professor (Gurmit Singh) became a taxi driver after failing secure other jobs. He meets another taxi driver (Mark Lee), who raises his child single-handedly after his wife left him for another man. This film is an inspiration from a real life story of Dr Cai Ming Jie, also known as the most highly educated taxi driver.

What I like: Actually nothing! I only laughed twice during this so called comedy while the rest of the cinema was busy chuckling. Is there something wrong with them? Or maybe my level of humor isnt the same as theirs. I have a high threshold for humor ok! hahah... erm... okay maybe not so harsh. This film discusses issues that taxi drivers face, such as their unstable income and the risk of being robbed and blackmailed. It also addresses deeply seeded issues such as the perceived superiority of the white collared workers as opposed to the blue collared ones.

What I dislike: I hate the kid in the show. He is also famously known as Jia Jia Professor who rose to fame after he discussed about politics in singlish on youtube. He even took a shot with our prime minister. Some may find him cute or smart for his age, but it just does not appeal to me. If you think a kid saying verses such as "boleh", "kee chew (raise your hand in hokkien)" is funny and cute, then this film is for you. However, when I realised that this boy has a learning disability in real life, I seem to have soften a little and not dislike him that much. Hmmm....

Ratings: 2/5 stars
